These socks are thick and warm. Unlike some other 'warm' socks they aren't loose, but they aren't overly tight around my calves. I have about 30 pairs of smartwool socks and these are by far my favorite winter sock. They are warmer than the 'mountaineer' socks (yes, I know they aren't advertised as the warmest sock). They are pretty thick if you are wearing them in your boot/shoe, but I keep buying them again and again.
I now have all three colors. Love the violet color combination. I wear them for casual, work and have shown up in Smartwool pattern socks at social events wearing a coat and tie. I'm in my 70's and no longer feel the need to dress to impress. So, all of my plain dress socks have been moved on. I have severe foot and ankle arthritis, and these socks provide the necessary comfort I need, even the light padding. The padding after the first washing is even softer.
These are great winter socks, probably too warm for summer

Toasty with full padding. It might not be for everyone but I have AAA feet so love that it takes up room, wicks well and my feet don't sweat through my sock

These socks are quite possibly the most comfortable and warm socks I have ever worn. I wear socks all day long, as we have hardwood floors and these are the first ever pair of socks that felt beyond comfortable upon putting them on my feet! I couldn't believe it. And I have paid top dollar on other brands that claim to be supportive and warm. I already purchased more, as I can't imagine wearing any other brand of socks for support, comfort and warmth. I have tested them out in single digit temperatures in the snow and my feet were toasty, but not sweaty. LOVE them and highly highly recommend.
These socks are the GREATEST ever!! I never want to take them off, they're extremely comfortable and the designs are so fun. If I could I would only wear these. Perfect for winter!
The sock is a bit thin on top of the foot and at the toes. The "full cushion" really means a nice thickness on the bottom of the sock and a looser thinner knit on top. The top of the foot and the toes are where the foot needs some extra insulation. I've never had the bottom of my foot get cold. This would be a 5 star sock if it had the same construction on top and the bottom of the foot. Turn one of these socks inside out and you'll see what I mean.
