Breville Bambino Plus ThermoJet Espresso Maker with Steam

Had to buy a bottomless portafilter because the portafilter it came with was not great. I had to have my grind settings all the way to 35 to get even a drop out. Once I replaced with a better portafilter I was able to get down to 17 or so and it was much easier to get in and out due to the longer handle with more leverage. The one it comes with is too short and my wife wasn't even able to get it out. Love the steam wand, and love the simplicity of the machine itself.

So far so good, this has proved to be a great entry point for me to the refined art of barista grade coffee preparation. I was able to make the best cappuccino I have ever tasted, although my latte art still leaves a lot to be desired. I bought a long handled naked portafilter in addition to the spouted short handled one provided and enjoy watching the stream of espresso and the great layer of crema this machine can produce. I also purchased a coffee grinder as nothing tastes as good as freshly ground coffee beans.

I loved this machine SO much, but only 3 months in, the problems started. After 4 months, despite following all the tips in the manual, reddit, & YouTube, I'm stuck with an inoperable machine. At THIS rate, Starbucks is cheaper. :(

I bought the Bambino Plus after conducting a lot of research. I was replacing a Sage Duo Temp that had done nine years of service. Sage builds quality machines and the Bambino Plus is quality. It is a lighter weight than the Duo Temp but that does not cause a problem. It is easier to move around the worktop. It offers more control i.e water temperature, a choice of controlled milk foam and automatic cleaning of the steam wand. I hope to get a long service life out of this machine and I believe it can be achieved by regular descaling, back flushing and cleaning. It is simple to operate and to date has been a joy to use. If you want a cup of coffee close to the quality offered by popular coffee cafes this is the machine to invest in. Enjoy!

Takes a bit of hand and arm power to use in the beginning. Especially because the machine itself is so tiny in comparison to our previous manual breville. Attaching and removing the porta filter for the first couple of weeks was a workout! It has eased up a bit and probably shouldn’t be too surprising. Separating the puck from the porta filter does require using the “razor” tool - bracing it in the little hole on the edge for leverage. Once I figured that out, it all works well. The extraction brewing works well, the water reservoir is sufficient and well designed. All in all, after getting used to it, it’s a keeper! Let’s hope it lasts as long as our previous espresso machines.
