I'm a petite 4 and ordered a woman's 4. The shorts are a nice medium weight knit. the Woman's 4 was too big in the waist but I kept them because it was a nice tailored look like the photo. After washing they are even bigger. If you are on the small side of 4, you may need a size 2 especially because they are stretchy. These dressy shorts are nice in public and easy to pair up or down.
