The noise-cancelling claim is legit but wow do they hurt the ear. I usually use 3M orange earplugs, these are similar in terms of looks and effectiveness but they're so uncomfortable it's crazy. I usually tolerate earplugs fine, but these start to hurt after a few minutes.
